DEVELOPING YOUR BONSAI

The bonsai can be grown from seeds or from cuttings.

FROM SEEDS:

  • Before sowing, seeds are kept in a bowl of water. Those seeds which floats are discarded and which sinks are used for sowing.
  • A seed pan or big pot is prepared for sowing. The hole at the bottom is covered by wire mesh.
  • The soil to be used is sieved as sieving separates three grades of the soil (coarse, medium and fine).
  • Now fill the pot to 1/4th of its depth with coarse soil at the bottom. Then put the second layer of the soil of medium type. Keep the seeds in this layer (about 5cm apart) and cover it with fine soil.

  • Water with fine watering can. Cover the seed pot with plastic or sheet of glass and place the pot in shady place. (Watering is done only when the topsoil becomes dry.)
  • When the seeds germinate cover is removed and the pot is kept outdoors in sunny areas.
  • Watering is done when the soil becomes dry.
  • When the seedlings are about three months old, a little fertiliser may be added to the seedbed.

  • Provide adequate protection during cold weather.

  • Most of the seedlings can be repotted after 6 months.
