MAINTAINING YOUR BONSAI

TRIMMING

The bonsai need trimming throughout the spring and summer. If you want the tree to grow in your desired way then the most easiest thing which you can do is to remove the new growth which is out of the way you are aiming for. If you want to grow a branch thicker then don’t trim it, let the foliage grow on it throughout the season and then trim it the following year. The second option is to keep the branch thin and this can be achieved by trimming the branch repeatedly. As the tip of the plant grows faster then any other part the upper portion needs frequent trimming the another reason being that the upper branches must be thinner then the lower branches.

Always trim at an angle close to bud without damaging the bud. Do not let the end bud be on the top as the branch sprouting will go straight. If you want the branch to grow right then leave the end bud pointing to the right. If you want to stop any further growth of new branches which may be spoiling the shape of your bonsai then just pinch off the tips of the unwanted buds whenever they arise. Do not remove all the new growth.
