Module 1

NGO Development and Management

There are so many different ways of associating with the term NGO. For those of you, who feel that the government is incompetent or inherently wicked, it may be attractive. For those who believe that government can serve socially useful purpose, it tends to be defined as an opposition.

NGO’s originally emerged as a consultative body, which played a role in helping government bodies set up agendas for certain sectors of society, and in making appearances to advocate policies. They hardly ever represented the actual role that is played by the NGO today, as a continuum ranging from dependency on government and the UN, interdependence and independence to isolation to virtual opposition.

NGO’s can be divided into two groups:

  1. NGO’s as vendors of goods and services on the basis of contract.

  2. NGOs driven by concern with values

Thus an NGO operation involves long and detailed working out which aims at delivering something new, overcoming ignorance, setting operational modes and forestalling difficulties.

There are several definitions to be found, you can pick and choose depending upon your objectives in setting up an NGO.

In this module, we shall have a look at the types of NGOs divided on the basis of Orientation and level of Operation. We shall then go on to look at the activities undertaken by an NGO and also identify the thrust areas that they are involved in apart from gaining an understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of an NGO. Also look at the roles played by NGOs.
